Renovation FAQs

Thank you for your patience during the renovation. Please bear with us as materials are temporarily relocated to accommodate the project. If you need help finding certain materials or collections, the staff are happy to show you where they may be found.

The following is a list of questions staff have been asked about the renovation. Architectural drawings and a floor plan are visible at the bottom of this webpage.

Are things being removed, added, or is it just a facelift?
No rooms or services are being eliminated. The Creative Lab/Makerspace is being expanded and there will be a separate media production lab. Additionally, study areas and seating are being added. Patrons will also be able to access the board games and “Library of Things” collection themselves.

How long will this last?
The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-October.

Did you get rid of the study rooms?
No, but they had to be dismantled in order for Phase 1 of the project to begin.

Is the Library getting more study rooms? Is there somewhere to do a Zoom call?
The plans include adding a small group room that seats 6 that can be used for study, meetings, and video conferencing. There will be three additional study booths. At this time, there are no private areas to make a zoom call.

When can I book a study room again? Can I use the meeting rooms instead?
We are hoping for the beginning of July. Unfortunately, the Meeting Rooms are unavailable for use by individuals.

Where is the Reference Desk right now? How long will it be in this temporary location?
The Reference Desk has been relocated across from Circulation (aka the Check-Out Desk) and will most likely be there until August.

Where do I return Library of Things (LoT) items?
LoT items should still be returned to the Reference Desk, which has been relocated across from Circulation (aka the Check-Out Desk).

Where do I go to check out Rokus?
Rokus may be checked out at the Reference Desk, which has been relocated across from Circulation (aka the Check-Out Desk).

So, are you finally getting rid of the red chairs for something more comfortable?
Those are not going away, but additional chairs will be added. Several people love the red chairs, and we buy seating that patrons can easily get out of and that will stand up to repeated use for many years.

Will the Library stay open throughout the renovation?
That is the plan. We may have to close if the HVAC needs to be shut down and it is extremely hot outside.

Are you getting more computers?
We will not add more computers because usage has declined. There will be a total of 16 stationary computers for the public to use. We will also loan out laptops to use in-house.

Where are the bathrooms?
Two of the bathrooms are currently unavailable due to the renovation, but the Library has bathrooms near the front and back entrances of the building. The Children’s Department also has a bathroom.

Why is the Reference Desk being moved from its old spot?
To make it more accessible, to have a better view of the entire Library, and to make room for the Library of Things collection.

Is there a quieter area where I can sit?
The study carrels are currently the quietest place right now.

Why are we using tax dollars to renovate the Library when it already looks fine? Why did you need to do a renovation?
The renovation was designed taking into account the increased demands for private study, collaborative use, and the decreased demand for audiovisual materials and computer use. Library usage has changed over time and the Library spaces were not being used to their full capacity. Staff were scattered over three different offices, and space was not being used efficiently.

Where is the money coming from to do the renovation?
The Library takes money that was not expended during the year to go into its Building and Grounds Fund. Public libraries do not have access to state capital funds and must save “general funds” to take care of renovation and maintenance. Public libraries are currently funded by the Public Library Fund (PLF), which is, for now, a percentage of the State’s General Revenue Fund. We also have a 2-mill local property tax that produces revenue.

What is changing? How is it going to look when it's finished?
